DEET, which stands for N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, is one of the most common active ingredients in insect repellents. It was developed by the U.S. Army in 1946 for use by military personnel in insect-infested areas. DEET is a powerful insect repellent that is effective against many biting insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, and biting flies.
DEET works by confusing insects' olfactory receptors. These receptors are used by insects to detect the scent of humans and animals, which they are naturally attracted to. When DEET interferes with these receptors, it makes it more difficult for insects to recognize the scent of a human or animal, effectively making the person or animal "invisible" to the insect.
Despite its effectiveness, there has been some concern about DEET's safety, especially for children and pregnant women. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reviewed the safety data and continues to believe that the normal use of DEET does not present a health concern. It's still important to use DEET-containing products as directed and avoid prolonged or excessive use.
